Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site

Explore the historic houses and engage in story time and eye-spy activities to learn about Steveston's unique cultural community. Students will participate in a shopping relay game while representing a family that may have lived in this community. NATIVE – NEWCOMER RELATIONS: CASE STUDIES IN CONTACT, COLONIALISM & RESISTANCE

MONOVA Museum and Archives of North Vancouver

The Native Voice was the first newspaper to focus on Indigenous issues in Canada. Through four case studies, students critically analyse articles from The Native Voice and other newspapers to look at the topics of Indigenous rights and land title in British Columbia. This program has been organized with the Squamish Nation Education Department and made possible in part through a grant from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage.

Your students will:

Analyze archival and contemporary newspaper articles relating to Indigenous rights and land title.
Answer and discuss critical thinking questions to develop a deeper understanding of the topic.

Native-Newcommer Relations: Case Studies in Contact, Colonialism, and Resistance

MONOVA Museum and Archives of North Vancouver

Secondary level students will critically analyze both archival and contemporary newspaper articles relating to aboriginal rights and land title in British Columbia. This program presents the story of native activism in the mid-twentieth century through the lens of one individual (Maisie Hurley, 1887-1962), founder of the Native Voice newspaper.

This program has been organized with the Squamish Nation Education Department and made possible in part through a grant from the Museums Assistance Program, Department of Canadian Heritage.

Nature Walk

Fraser River Discovery Centre

On your last walk through nature, what did you notice? What did you wonder? In this program students will explore the connections between living things within their local environment (Kingdom Plantae). They will learn the connection between science and our communities and how they can begin to identify plants in their everyday lives. Students will learn some of the key identifiers of each sub-category in the Kingdom Plantae and use these skills on a nature walk. This information can then be used in the classroom to further investigate plants and find connections between plants, and between people and nature.

Grades: 2-7 Length: 1.5 – 2 hours Maximum group size: 30 students

Introduction to Kingdom Plantae
Explore and observe nature by going on a nature walk
Practice observation skills through different activities
Make connections between science and our communities
This program starts with a 20-minute presentation inside, then takes place mostly outside.

Nature's Classroom (grades 3-8) A multi-session outdoor learning experience. Fall and Spring dates.

Langley Environmental Partners Society

As classes plant and tend vegetables at local community gardens, students learn about soil and composting, discover the needs of plants, and become environmental stewards. Throughout the series, they will develop an awareness of environmental issues and social responsibiility as they learn about local food security. Food grown and harvested is donated to local food banks.

This workshop series will be 4 sessions, administered outside, and masks are required for all students. All workshop supplies will be sanitized after every single presentation.
